“Sight Unseen” re-released under Creative Commons

December 26th, 2008

I’ve put up the fifth story I’m re-releasing under a Creative Commons License, “Sight Unseen.”

This story was originally slated to be the title story of the collection, but the editors thought the collection should be named after the novella,  “The Wave.” I understood the logic, but at the time, I thought this really was the most interesting and most experimental story included.  So, instead of being the title story, it was the final story.

In “Sight Unseen,” I was really trying to play with voice, and with how closely I could capture the feeling of a story without hammering heavily on plot. There is a plot, but the movement between voice and  verb tense was where I was most attentive. I tried to shift voice and tense without actually changing the point of view (although it feels like you change POV, you actually never do). Reading it over now, I’m not really sure how successful the story is, but I still think it remains the most interesting and most experimental. And I still love Miss Jane Rowe.

Anyway, enjoy.

Here is a very slightly revised version of “Sight Unseen” corrected mostly for some style issues that got submerged in the published version. It was originally published in The Wave And Other Stories.
